Colombia Surfing by: Wolf Sebring
Colombia Surfing - You are going to find the best Colombia surfing on the Pacific coastline of the country although there are some surfing spots on the Caribbean side as well. On the Carribbean side, you will find that the best time to surf is between December and March (dry season) and from July through September during the hurricane season where many low pressure system form not too far from the coast of Colombia. Some of the locations to surf are very remote so just beware of any travel advisories related to kidnapping risk before you venture off into a remote unpopulated area. Here are a few popular surfing areas: El Cantil Ecolodge, Niqui: This is a Pacific surfing lodge. They provide surfing guides. The waves include point breaks, river mouths, and beach breaks. The best breaks here are reached by powerboat and it is recommended that you surf in groups so as to save on the cost of the boat ride. They have an excellent and informative website at http://www.elcantil.com. El Muelle, Puerto Colombia: This is on the Caribbean coastline and has surfing suitable for all skill levels. Its location is 20 minutes from Barranquilla City. When you get to Puerto Colombia which is a small town, just ask around where El Muelle is and folks will be able to tell you. There is a long pier where if you walk towards the end, you will find a some swells to surf. Los Naranjos, Santa Marta: This Colombia surfing spot takes a little effort to get to but it is reported to have waves you do not want to miss. From the Barranquilla Airport you will want to go north past Santa Marta until you get to Tayrona National Park and go 2 km past the entrance to Canaveral. There is a restaurant there where you can park your car. It would be a good idea if you can maybe pay someone a fee to watch your car. You will walk through the jungle, past a shallow river, crossing it again when it curves, and you will reach the surfing point. The walk through the jungle is reported to be beautiful. Altogether you can find 17 surf spots on the Caribbean and 7 on the Pacific for Colombia surfing . A great website to get information on all of these spots is at http://www.wannasurf.com |
